
Giving Your Old Blow Molding Machine a Second Life
If you’ve got an old blow molding machine on your floor, you know the feeling. It’s a workhorse, but it’s just not hitting the cycle times you need. It’s easy to assume the machine is just “too old” and needs to be replaced. But usually, the real bottleneck isn’t the machine itself—it’s the oven. If you swap out those tired, standard lamps for high-density infrared replacements (the kind built for SIPA-style setups), your output can change overnight.
The trick to getting heat in faster
Here’s the thing: to speed up production, you have to get that PET preform to the right temperature quickly, but you can’t just blast the surface and burn it. That’s where short-wave infrared comes in. By moving to high-output halogen tubes, you’re basically pumping more energy into the plastic in a fraction of the time. **But a word of warning.**Don’t just jam in a higher-wattage lamp and hope for the best. You’ve got to check your breakers and wiring first. If you don’t, you’re looking at a blown fuse or a melted control cabinet. Not a great way to start the shift.
The nitty-gritty on the hardware
We build these lamps with heavy-wall quartz glass. Why? Because they need to handle the “thermal shock” of rapid cycling without cracking. We also use halogen gas to keep the filament from evaporating, which means the lamps actually last. And please, double-check your connectors. We use R7s or SK15 to keep things tight. If that connection is loose, it arcs. And once it starts arcing, it’ll eat your socket for breakfast. We also offer coated versions. These narrow the radiation spectrum, focusing the heat exactly where it needs to be—on the preform—instead of baking the machine frame.
The catch (because there’s always one)
More heat means faster cycles. That sounds great, right? But it also puts a lot more pressure on your cooling system. If you crank up the heat without making sure your blower fans are moving enough air, you’re going to scorch the plastic. It’s a balancing act. If your cooling is weak, you’ll start seeing those annoying “pearls” or burnt spots in your PET. You can’t just turn up the heat; you’ve got to make sure the airflow can keep up.
