
Fixing the Headache of Sidel SBO 20 Series 2 Lamp Failures
If you’ve spent any time on a SIG Blomax or Sidel SBO line, you know the frustration of a tube bursting. It’s a nightmare. One minute everything is humming along, and the next, you’re dealing with a line stop because a quartz envelope couldn’t handle the heat or the vibration. We got tired of seeing that happen, so we rebuilt the Replacement lamps for the SBO 20 Series 2 to actually hold up under pressure. Getting the heat right Here’s the thing: you need the PET preform to hit that sweet spot—the glass transition temperature—without scorching the neck. We tuned these lamps for high-intensity shortwave IR. It basically means you get a concentrated punch of heat exactly where it belongs: the body of the preform. This lets you speed up your cycle times without wasting energy or overheating the wrong parts of the bottle. Built to take a beating Standard quartz is fragile. Between the constant vibration of a high-speed line and the way the material expands and shrinks with the heat, those tubes just snap. We switched to a reinforced quartz blend. It’s tougher. It can take the abuse of a fast-moving environment without cracking. And we didn’t stop at the glass. We tightened the tolerances on the end caps and used precision-fit connectors. Why? Because a loose connection leads to arcing, and arcing kills your lamps. By keeping the electrical contact tight, we stop the electrodes from migrating and keep the bulbs burning longer. The “Catch” (and how to handle it) These are drop-in replacements. You don’t have to mess with your PLC settings or rewire your oven. It’s a simple swap. But there is one thing to watch out for. Because these lamps are more stable and reinforced, they tend to hold onto heat a bit longer. If your oven’s cooling fans are clogged with dust or just not working right, that extra heat has nowhere to go. That’s when you start seeing “pearlescence” or over-blown bottles. So, do yourself a favor:clean your fans. At the end of the day, we just focused on the physics. Better quartz, a steadier filament, and tighter fits. It means fewer line stops and a much more consistent blow across every single cavity.
