
Why we put our IP65 heaters through the “steam chamber”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. Between the thick steam, the direct splashes from the shower, and the way the room goes from freezing to tropical in five minutes, it’s a recipe for disaster. We build our infrared lamps to IP65 standards. But here’s the thing—a rating on a spec sheet doesn’t actually tell you if the lamp will survive a real winter. That’s why we put every single batch through damp-heat aging tests.
The problem with steam
You’ve probably seen the IP65 label. It means the unit is dust-tight and can handle a water jet. But steam is a different beast. Water droplets are one thing, but vapor? It finds a way. It slips through seals that liquid water can’t touch. Once that moisture gets inside, it settles on the circuitry and the terminals. Then comes the oxidation. It starts slow. A little rust here, a bit of corrosion there. Suddenly, the connection gets weak, the resistance climbs, and—pop—your lamp is dead or the housing shorts out.
We try to break them
We don’t just spray the units with a hose and call it a day. Instead, we lock them in a chamber with cranking heat and suffocating humidity for hundreds of hours. We want the materials to expand and shrink over and over. We’re looking for “creep”—that annoying moment when a gasket loses its grip or the glue starts to give up. While they’re in there, we’re obsessing over a few things:
- Is the electrical insulation still holding up?
- Are the seals warping under the heat?
- Is the internal reflector starting to cloud or corrode?
The balancing act
Now, you might think, “Just seal it tighter!” But there’s a catch. If we make the casing a total fortress, we trap the heat inside. If the internal components can’t breathe, the driver will literally fry itself. It’s a constant tug-of-war. We have to find that sweet spot where the IP65 seal keeps the moisture out, but the venting and heat sinks keep the electronics cool. Nobody wants to install a lamp in December only to have it fail by March because of a few steamy showers. We do the grueling tests now so you don’t have to deal with a maintenance headache later.
