Standard space heaters don’t really help because they try to warm up all the air in the room first. It takes forever. So, we decided to try something different. We tucked short-wave infrared emitters right behind the mirrors or inside the vanity fixtures. Here is the secret: these aren’t warming the air. They’re sending heat directly to you. It’s a bit like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a cold day. You feel it instantly. Why it works so fast It all comes down to the quartz heating element. Inside is a tungsten filament that gets hot in milliseconds. You flip the switch, and boom—you’re warm. Because it’s radiant heat, it doesn’t care if the room is drafty or if there’s a window open. The warmth just hits you. It’s a great feeling when you’re stepping out of a shower or getting dressed. The nitty-gritty of the build Fitting these into slim mirror frames is a bit of a puzzle. We use compact units with snap-in connectors, which makes it way easier if you ever need to swap one out. Since this is a bathroom, moisture is the enemy. We make sure the seals are airtight so the terminals don’t rust or corrode over time. We also have to be careful with the wattage. If you push too much power into a small area, the glass can get too hot and actually crack from the stress. We spend a lot of time calibrating the distance between the heater and the reflective backing to make sure the heat beams forward, right where you need it. A few things to keep in mind It’s not magic, and there are a couple of trade-offs. Short-wave IR doesn’t travel very far. If you step more than two meters away, the heat drops off fast. That’s why placement is everything. You have to put the mirror exactly where people actually stand. And a word of warning for the installation crew: those quartz tubes are fragile. One wrong move or a slight pinch during mounting can crack the tube, and then the whole unit is toast. Handle them with care.
