
Why we put our bathroom heaters through a “humidity hell” test
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and water vapor getting into every tiny crack. It’s a recipe for disaster. If a seal on a quartz tube slips or a wire gets a bit of moisture on it, the whole thing can short out. Nobody wants their heater to die mid-shower. We don’t just hope for the best. We put our hardware through damp-heat aging tests to make sure it actually lasts.
The battle against the steam
Most of these mirror heaters use shortwave quartz. The heating element is tucked inside a quartz envelope, but the real trouble starts at the seals and connectors. Here’s the thing: steam is sneaky. It finds microscopic gaps in the housing and crawls inside. Once that moisture hits the live electrical terminals, it starts a chemical reaction that eats away at the components. Eventually, it just stops working. To stop that, we throw every batch into a chamber with 95% humidity and keep flipping the temperature up and down. We’re basically trying to force the moisture in. If a seal is going to fail, we want it to happen in our lab, not in your customer’s ceiling.
Heat, breathing, and rust
These lamps get incredibly hot. When you turn them on and off in a damp room, the materials expand and shrink. Think of it like the unit is “breathing.” Every time it cools down, it can actually suck moist air right into the lamp socket. We test for this specifically because we don’t want mirror reflectors peeling off or electrical contacts rusting. When those contacts oxidize, they create resistance. That means more heat builds up at the terminal, which can actually melt the plastic housing. To prevent that, we run them for 500 hours and check for voltage drops. If the connection isn’t tight, it doesn’t pass.
The trade-off
Now, there’s a catch. If we make the seals too tight to keep every drop of water out, we can trap gases inside. This might slightly change the color of the light over time. It’s a balance. For us, it’s a no-brainer: we’ll take a 1% difference in light color any day if it means the heater is safe and won’t trip the breaker while you’re scrubbing your hair.
