
Does faster response actually save power in a bakery oven?
People ask us this all the time. They want to know if cutting down the response time really puts money back in their pocket. If you’re using nichrome elements in quartz tubes, the answer is a big yes. It all comes down to something called “thermal overshoot.” Which is really just a fancy way of saying your oven keeps getting hotter even after you’ve told it to stop.
The problem with “slow” heat
Most old-school heating elements are heavy. They take a while to get hot, but here’s the real killer: they take forever to cool down. Even after the thermostat clicks off, that stored heat keeps bleeding into the oven. The temperature climbs right past where you wanted it. Now you’re wasting energy, and worse, you’re risking a batch of burnt bread. Our quartz tubes handle things differently. We put high-resistance nichrome wire inside a high-purity quartz envelope. Because there’s so little mass to heat up, the lag disappears. The quartz lets infrared radiation fly straight through to the dough. It’s fast. Really fast. You get heat on the product in seconds.
Working smarter, not harder
When your oven can hit the target temperature almost instantly, you can stop relying on those long, heavy “on” cycles that just soak the whole chamber in excess heat. Instead, you use short, punchy bursts of energy. You stop fighting the air and start targeting the dough. It’s a much cleaner way to bake.
A few things to keep in mind
Now, you can’t just slap these into any old setup. Because the switching happens so fast, a cheap on/off relay won’t cut it. You’ll end up shocking the nichrome wire until it snaps. Go with SSRs (Solid State Relays) instead—they can handle the rapid-fire switching without breaking a sweat. Also, a quick word of caution: quartz is brittle. It’s tough, but it doesn’t like being hit. If your oven vibrates a lot or things tend to bump into the elements, get a protective cage. Trust me, it’s a lot cheaper than replacing your tubes every few months.
